BIKE MONTH 2014
Bike Month 2014 has come and gone, and we sure had a fun time, didn't we? If you missed the events and activities, scroll down for a reminder of all the action that transpired. Then be sure to come back in May for Bike Month 2015!
It’s bike month, friends. That means one thing here in Fresno, and the rest of the country. It’s time to remember how great it feels to be out in the world riding your bike. Whether it’s for utility, recreation, training or exercise, there's one thing we can all agree on: “Biking = Joy.”
To remind you of this I Bike Fresno mantra, we’ve arranged for some events and incentives to get you in the bike-riding spirit.
One month. One million miles. Every year we challenge the greater Fresno area to ride a collective million miles during Bike Month. Why? Because riding a million miles as a community would be COOL! Imagine being part of something like that. Part of a community that decides to value biking — to work, to the store, around the block, ALL biking — as a way to create a healthier, more vibrant place to live. That's what a million miles is all about. So let’s DO IT!
Plus, all that riding will make you eligible for...
How bad do we want you to ride your bike every day in the month of May? Well, we’re not above bribery. We’ve got 31 Days of Prizes, including vacation getaways, winery tours, skydiving(!), tickets to sporting events, plenty of bike stuff (of course) and a lot more. To win, just ride your bike and log your miles here at ibikefresno.org. Every day you log a mile, you’ll be entered into that day’s drawing. The next day, we’ll select a name at random to win some awesome prizes. Drawings for each day happen at noon the following day (e.g., the drawing for miles ridden on Monday will take place at noon on Tuesday) to give you time to get your miles logged.
On Wednesday, May 7, ride in one of the funnest and longest standing bike month events: the Mall-to-Mall Ride. You and your bike riding friends will take to the streets and ride with a police escort that stops traffic for us as we take a lane from the Manchester Mall to the Fulton Mall. Then enjoy an informal return ride back to the Manchester Mall. It’s a fun ride and a great way to meet other riders. Show up at Manchester by 7:30 a.m.
Ride your bike to the Old Town Clovis Farmers Market and I Bike Fresno will valet park it for free. FREE. Avoid the traffic and parking by letting us watch your bike for you. Collect your bike when you’re ready to head home and then log your miles at ibikefresno.org. And it's not just during May. It's all summer long! Every Friday night, May 9–September 26. Can’t beat that, right?
Riding a million miles in the month of May is serious business. So it makes sense to ride your bike to where YOU do business. Wednesday, May 14 is Bike to Work Day. Get your fellow employees together and ride in the Kaiser Permanente Bike to Work Corporate Challenge for a chance to win even more prizes. It’s a great way to motivate the office to get moving!
The California Classic Century Ride is Saturday, May 17. It’s open to all ages and includes century (100 miles), metric (60 miles), and mini-metric (35 miles) routes that start and end at Chukchansi Park and include a stretch down a bike-friendly Freeway 168 that’s completely closed to car traffic!
On Sunday, May 18, ride your bike to the Fresno Grizzlies game at Chukchansi Park and get a discounted ticket to the game (just 6 bucks)! And I Bike Fresno will provide FREE bike valet at the game. You can ride from anywhere, but to be part of the official group, meet at Rubber Soul Bicycles at 11:30 a.m. and ride to the stadium for the 2:05 p.m. game. PLUS Rubber Soul and the Grizzlies will be raffling off 2 kids' bikes during the 8th inning!
(Coming from the other side of town? Check out this unofficial ride from Sunnyside!)
There's a bunch of other stuff going on this May. More rides, more bike valets, more cool events. Click here for the full event calendar, and add your own bicycle-related event!
